Side Yard Rock Landscaping and Rubber Mulch Play Area Cleanup

Fall is winding down, but there's still time to get things wrapped up before the ground freezes. This job was a solid example of what a well-planned side yard refresh and backyard play area upgrade can look like - practical, clean, and built to last through whatever the season throws at it.

The side yard got a full lava rock treatment running the length of the fence line. Black lava rock is one of our go-to materials for low-maintenance xeriscaping. It doesn't break down, it doesn't blow away, and it keeps weed pressure way down without needing bark replaced every year. The curving edge along the driveway gives it a finished, intentional look that ties everything together nicely.

Out back, the play area was surfaced with rubber mulch - the blue and black mix you see here. This isn't just a cosmetic choice. Rubber mulch gives you real impact absorption around a trampoline or play set, it drains well, and it won't attract the insects and mold that traditional wood mulch can. For families with kids, it's one of the smarter surface upgrades you can make.

The in-ground trampoline sits flush with the rubber mulch surface, which cuts out the fall hazard you get with above-ground frames. That's a detail that matters. The concrete border keeps the rubber mulch contained and gives the whole space a defined, tidy edge.
